A hotel buys a generator for the two hours a year the grid fails, and judges it on the 8,760 hours a year it sits silent. That is why the acoustic package matters more than the kW on this duty: a set that keeps the lights on but wakes the guests has failed at the job it was bought for. We size the canopy to the site boundary, not to a brochure figure.
The second half of the problem is what stays on. Lifts, corridor lighting, fire pumps and kitchen refrigeration must all transfer inside ten seconds, and the load has to be split so a chiller start does not trip the set. We ask for the building one-line diagram before we quote, and we set the ATS logic to the building rather than shipping a default panel.

Power ratings follow ISO 8528-1:2018 (Prime PRP / Standby ESP), and the fuel figures are stated at ISO 3046-1:2002 standard reference conditions. Both are confirmed unit by unit on our load bank, and the test record ships with the set. Standby figures are the engine's factory standby rating from the model spectrum table — never a computed 110% of the rated output. Noise figures are typical open-type reference values, not a guaranteed sound-power level.
Frequently Asked Questions
How quiet can a hotel generator be?▼
Our canopy sets are built to roughly 68 dB(A) at 7 metres on the smaller frames, rising to about 75 dB(A) on the largest canopy sets. Those are reference values, not promises. Give us the noise limit at the nearest guest room or boundary and the distance, and we will confirm whether a standard canopy clears it or needs a higher acoustic grade.
Which loads must a hotel backup supply carry?▼
At minimum: lifts, emergency and corridor lighting, fire pumps and the fire alarm panel, kitchen refrigeration and cold rooms, and the front-desk and IT systems. Full-building coverage is possible but expensive, so most projects split critical and non-critical busbars and shed the non-critical side during an outage. We ask for that split before quoting.
Where should the set be installed at a hotel?▼
As far from guest rooms as the site allows: normally a basement plant room or a service yard with an exhaust route away from air intakes and windows. A basement install needs a ventilation path for radiator heat and a ducted exhaust; a yard install needs a canopy and a security fence. Send the site plan and we will say which is cheaper.
