Diesel Generators for Construction & Infrastructure Sites

A construction site is the hardest duty in the catalogue to design for, because nothing about it stays still. The work front moves, the load changes as the plant arrives, and the set sits in dust, mud and weather for months. The answer is normally a mobile set with enough reserve to start a crusher or a dewatering pump across the line, and air filtration that survives the site.

These sets also usually run as the only power source rather than as backup, so prime rating, fuel consumption per shift and the service interval matter more here than anywhere else. We size them on the real motor starting load, not the total nameplate, and we keep the wear parts to standard types the site mechanic can find locally.

What this duty asks of the set

These are the three points we check first when a construction & infrastructure sites enquiry reaches us. They decide the rating, the cooling package and the control hardware long before price enters the conversation.

01

Trailer-mounted or canopy sets that move as the work front moves, with a lockable base fuel tank.

02

Dual-stage air filtration and dust-tolerant cooling for crusher dust and haul-road grit.

03

Direct-on-line starting reserve for crushers, dewatering pumps and welding plant.

Configurations we usually quote for this duty: TFW-50, TFW-100, TFW-200 (Trailer or Canopy).

Recommended generator sets

Catalogue models that carry this duty run from 50 kW to 250 kW prime. Outside that band we build to the same specification on request — send the load and the site conditions and an engineer will size it. Each card opens the full datasheet, fuel curve and dimensions.

Power ratings follow ISO 8528-1:2018 (Prime PRP / Standby ESP), and the fuel figures are stated at ISO 3046-1:2002 standard reference conditions. Both are confirmed unit by unit on our load bank, and the test record ships with the set. Standby figures are the engine's factory standby rating from the model spectrum table — never a computed 110% of the rated output. Noise figures are typical open-type reference values, not a guaranteed sound-power level.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I size a generator for a construction site?▼

Start with the largest motor that has to start across the line, then add the running load of everything else that is on at the same time. Motor starting, not the total nameplate, usually sets the size. Send the list of plant with the starting method for the biggest motor and we will size the set with a real margin rather than a rule of thumb.

Should I buy or hire a site generator?▼

On a project longer than a few months, buying normally wins: the hire charge accrues every week and the set you get is rarely sized for your load. Buying also gives you a machine you can service on your own schedule and keep for the next site. For short or unpredictable jobs, a trailer-mounted set you can resell or redeploy is the usual compromise.

What protects a site generator from dust?▼

A dual-stage air intake: a cyclonic pre-cleaner to eject the coarse dust before it reaches the paper element, with a radial-seal safety filter behind it. Add a dust-tolerant radiator core and a fuel-water separator, and service the filters on hours rather than on calendar intervals. Dust is what shortens engine life on a site, not the running hours.
