250 kVA Silent Backup Power for a Metro Manila Hospital
Six 250 kVA silent sets for a Metro Manila hospital, calibrated for 60Hz 220V single-phase emergency supply with <10s ATS transfer.
This page describes a project we scoped and quoted. It is a scenario and a solution, not a delivered reference - we do not publish a client name, a site photograph or a commissioning record we cannot show you.
Project overview
A private hospital in Metro Manila runs sensitive medical equipment — operating theatres, ICU monitors and life-support systems — on a grid that is unstable during typhoon season. The site needed a redundant backup power solution that starts automatically, keeps noise low inside the patient wing, and meets the local 60Hz / 220V single-phase configuration. The project is scoped as a multi-set parallel-ready backup plant with individual ATS panels per building block.
What the site had to solve
- ›Local grid unstable — frequent brownouts and voltage dips during the wet season damage sensitive medical electronics.
- ›High ambient temperature and humidity (up to 35°C, 85% RH) shorten alternator and battery life if cooling is undersized.
- ›Hospital wards require low noise — an open-set plant next to the patient wing is not acceptable.
- ›Power must transfer under 10 seconds when the grid fails; manual start is not an option for life-support loads.
- ›Local after-sales support is thin; the set must use parts that a local electrician can source and service.
Technical requirements
Required capacity
250 kVA prime per set (60Hz, 1800 rpm)
Duty rating
Standby / emergency — up to 200 hours per year, unlimited peak demand
Canopy & controls
Silent canopy ≤ 68 dB(A) at 7m; automatic ATS panel with <10s transfer
Load type
ICU, operating theatre, lighting, pumps — mixed motor + electronics load
Environment
Tropical coastal — 35°C max ambient, 85% RH, typhoon-grade rain protection
How we configured it
- 01Matched a Yuchai YC6B series engine to our own TFW200 brushless alternator — proven 60Hz architecture with AVR ±1% regulation for clean medical-grade voltage.
- 02Upgraded the radiator to a tropical 50°C heavy-duty unit with pusher fan and protective fan guard, so the set holds rating at 35°C ambient without derating.
- 03Fitted a fully insulated silent canopy with double-wall acoustic panels and base-fuel tank, targeting 68 dB(A) at 7 metres.
- 04Included a dedicated ATS panel with programmable transfer delay and separate critical/non-critical load shedding, configured before shipment to the hospital's one-line diagram.
- 05Specified class-H insulation and VPI vacuum-pressure impregnation on the alternator windings for long-term humid-climate reliability, and kept all wear parts (filters, belts, AVR) to standard off-the-shelf types.

What this configuration is designed to deliver
- ›This solution effectively solves the grid-instability problem by bringing online a dedicated 60Hz 250 kVA plant that transfers in under 10 seconds.
- ›The tropical-rated cooling and Class-H VPI windings are expected to hold up reliably in Manila's high-humidity coastal climate.
- ›The silent canopy keeps noise inside the 68 dB(A) envelope required around patient wards.
- ›Using standard, widely available wear parts greatly reduces maintenance cost and downtime for the hospital's local engineering team.
- ›The ATS with load-shedding logic ensures life-support circuits are the last to shed and the first to be restored.
These are the effects the design targets, described as expectations rather than measured field results.

Power ratings follow ISO 8528-1:2018 (Prime PRP / Standby ESP), and the fuel figures are stated at ISO 3046-1:2002 standard reference conditions. Both are confirmed unit by unit on our load bank, and the test record ships with the set. Standby figures are the engine's factory standby rating from the model spectrum table — never a computed 110% of the rated output. Noise figures are typical open-type reference values, not a guaranteed sound-power level.
