Yuchai vs Cummins vs Perkins: Comparing Generator Sets for Southeast Asia

We build with Yuchai, so take our side in this with the appropriate pinch of salt. What follows is the comparison framework we use when a buyer puts our quote next to a Cummins or Perkins package, and the same questions will serve you with any supplier.
The short answer
There is no universal winner: Yuchai-powered sets usually offer the lowest acquisition cost with strong parts availability out of China, while Cummins and Perkins command a premium backed by long-established dealer networks. The right answer depends on your duty cycle, your local service support and a like-for-like configuration comparison.
- ›Compare configurations, not badges: alternator copper content, controller brand, radiator package, warranty terms and test records decide the real value.
- ›Yuchai is one of China's largest diesel engine makers; the G-drive genset engines in this catalogue are matched with our own TFW brushless alternators.
- ›Emissions: the tier is declared per engine - China GB 20891 non-road T2 on the D2x line, China GB 20891 non-road T3 on the D3x line - with EUP or HPCR injection as fitted; documentation is provided for destination-market review.
- ›For remote sites, ask every brand the same question: who services this engine within a day's travel, and how fast can filters and injectors arrive?
Where the price difference comes from
In the same power class, Chinese Yuchai-powered sets generally price below European or American equivalents. Part of that is labor and supply-chain cost, part is brand premium and dealer structure. None of it is visible on the quote sheet unless you dig into the configuration: is the alternator full copper, what controller is fitted, what does the warranty actually cover, and does the set come with a load-bank test record or just a nameplate.
Engine platform and emissions
The Yuchai 200 kW class, for example, uses a 10.34 L in-line six-cylinder block with good step-load response. The emission tier follows the engine suffix: D2x models are non-road T2, D3x models meet GB 20891 non-road T3 (and D4x models are non-road T4). Displacement alone should never rank brands; ask each supplier for the specific fuel consumption curve and the step-load performance data for your duty, then compare those.
Service networks in ASEAN
Cummins and Perkins have decades-old distributor networks across Southeast Asia, which matters if you need a certified technician in a secondary city tomorrow morning. Yuchai's strength is parts availability and cost out of China, plus a growing service presence. For a standby set in a capital city, any of the three can be serviced well. For a prime set on a remote island, choose the brand whose filters, injectors and controllers can reach you fastest, and buy the critical spares kit with the set.
Running a like-for-like comparison
Put these items in a table for every quote: prime and standby kW/kVA, engine model and emission tier, alternator model and insulation class, controller brand, radiator and ambient rating, base fuel tank hours, canopy type and dBA at 7 m, warranty terms, test records included, lead time and Incoterm. We will fill in that table for our side and sign it; ask the competing supplier to do the same.

Power ratings follow ISO 8528-1:2018 (Prime PRP / Standby ESP), and the fuel figures are stated at ISO 3046-1:2002 standard reference conditions. Both are confirmed unit by unit on our load bank, and the test record ships with the set. Standby figures are the engine's factory standby rating from the model spectrum table — never a computed 110% of the rated output. Noise figures are typical open-type reference values, not a guaranteed sound-power level.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are Yuchai generators as reliable as Cummins?▼
Reliability follows configuration and maintenance more than badge. Yuchai is a large state-owned engine maker whose G-drive genset engines run in power plants across Asia. Compare the specific fuel consumption curve, warranty terms and the test record behind each individual offer rather than the brand reputation.
Are Yuchai spare parts available in Southeast Asia?▼
Yes. Filters, injectors, pumps and gaskets for the engines in this catalogue ship from stock in 1–5 days, and overhaul kits are listed on our parts page. For remote sites we recommend the critical spares kit so a common failure never waits on freight.
Which brand holds resale value better in ASEAN?▼
Cummins and Perkins generally command higher second-hand prices where their dealer networks are strong. Yuchai sets trade actively at lower absolute prices, and the gap narrows when the unit has full service records and a recent load-bank test behind it.
