50Hz vs 60Hz Diesel Generators: What to Order for Each ASEAN Grid

By Tommy, Export Sales Manager at Zhiqiang Power · tommy@zhiqiang-power.com · Last reviewed 2026-09-17 against factory load-bank data

The Philippines is the odd one out in ASEAN, and it catches exporters regularly: a 50Hz set shipped to Manila will run everything about 17% slow, from pumps to clocks, and motors will overheat. Five minutes of reading here prevents that mistake.

The short answer

Vietnam, Thailand, Malaysia, Myanmar, Indonesia and Singapore run their grids at 50Hz (1500 rpm on a 4-pole set); the Philippines runs at 60Hz (1800 rpm). Order the set calibrated for the destination grid, because frequency is fixed by engine speed.

  • ›Frequency is not a switch setting: on a 4-pole alternator, 50Hz means the engine turns at 1500 rpm and 60Hz means 1800 rpm.
  • ›The same engine platform usually delivers more kW at 60Hz, because it is doing more cycles per second, at somewhat higher mechanical stress.
  • ›All sets in this catalogue are available with factory dual-frequency calibration; the product pages print both voltage/frequency combinations.
  • ›Converting a set in the field means recalibrating the governor, fuel pump timing and AVR, plus re-rating the nameplate. It is factory work, not a site adjustment.

Which frequency does your market use?

Vietnam, Thailand, Malaysia, Myanmar, Indonesia and Singapore all run 50Hz grids, with three-phase 400/230V the common industrial supply. The Philippines runs 60Hz, and depending on region and utility you will see 220/380V or 480V three-phase. The country pages on this site print the grid data and import notes for each market.

What 1500 vs 1800 rpm changes

The higher speed of a 60Hz set generally yields more kW from the same engine family, but it also means faster piston travel, higher turbo speed and shorter intervals between overhauls. On a standby set that runs a few hours a month this barely matters; on a prime set running thousands of hours a year, maintenance planning should reflect it.

Can a 50Hz generator be converted to 60Hz?

Yes, but not by flipping a switch. The engine governor and fuel pump timing must be recalibrated for 1800 rpm, the alternator AVR re-set for the new frequency and voltage, and the nameplate re-rated. We do this at the factory for export orders; a set converted properly in the field needs the same work by someone with the calibration files.

If your project may move between markets, order dual-frequency calibration up front. Every genset on this site lists its supported combinations, for example 400/230V 50Hz and 220/380V 60Hz on the same model.

Power ratings follow ISO 8528-1:2018 (Prime PRP / Standby ESP), and the fuel figures are stated at ISO 3046-1:2002 standard reference conditions. Both are confirmed unit by unit on our load bank, and the test record ships with the set. Standby figures are the engine's factory standby rating from the model spectrum table — never a computed 110% of the rated output. Noise figures are typical open-type reference values, not a guaranteed sound-power level.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which ASEAN countries use 60Hz power?▼

The Philippines is the main 60Hz market in our export region. Vietnam, Thailand, Malaysia, Myanmar, Indonesia and Singapore all run 50Hz. Always confirm the site voltage as well, since the Philippines mixes 220/380V and 480V three-phase supplies by region.

What happens if I run 60Hz equipment on a 50Hz supply?▼

Motors turn about 17% slower, pumps and fans move less, cooling weakens, and magnetic equipment runs hotter. Some electronics cope because their power supplies handle 50–60Hz, but motor-driven plant does not. Match the set to the equipment, not the other way around.

Does the same generator model produce different kW at 60Hz?▼

Usually yes, roughly 15–20% more at 1800 rpm for the same engine platform, with adjusted maintenance intervals. The exact 60Hz rating is printed on the datasheet we issue with each dual-frequency order, and confirmed on the load bank at that speed.
